The Birth of the "Metropolitan Clothing Palace"

To truly understand the origins of the STEFFL Department Store, one must look far back into the past. The history of this unique building in the heart of Vienna dates back to the 18th century, and likely even further. The building’s legacy as a premier retail destination began in 1895. Back then, the premises at Kärntner Straße 19 housed the men's outfitter M. Neumann, designed by the architectural icon Otto Wagner. This magnificent Art Nouveau (Jugendstil) structure was defined by its use of glass, white marble plaster, and gilded porcelain. Adorning the facade was the inscription "Metropolitan Clothing Palace"—a name chosen to highlight the international flair of Kärntner Straße and to appeal to a highly sophisticated clientele.
